12 volt emergency gear

Question: During Hurricane flood, I had excellent luck with a "sump pump" I built based on a 12 volt bilge pump. It kept the water that generally floods my basement in extreme rains under reasonable control even though my power was out for three days. Now I'm thinking of expanding this to include some 12 volt lighting and maybe a TV, but need a way to charge batteries should I have an extended outage. It occurs to me that I can hook a gasoline motor up via a pulley to a common auto alternator and voltage regulator in order to charge the batteries. Anyone tried this before? Anything I'm not seeing here?

Answer: -Don't run the gasoline engine in your basement, the carbon monoxide will kill you. -You're using deep-cycle batteries, I hope. You could also hook up to a $200 computer UPS and get a few hundred watts of AC. RV supply outfits have all the modern comforts in 12VDC.
