Question: Can anyone recommend a decent brand of in-line sediment filter? Some of the ones I've seen searching online have a gauge at the top of the housing, not sure if this is water pressure or something else, or if it's necessary. I'm assuming the one I am looking for should use 20 micron replacable filters and have a garden hose attachment for flushing at the bottom. We have city water and currently our hot water heater is our only "filter". Our local plumbing supply only sells American Plumber brand. Any suggestions?
Answer: -The only flushable units I know of do not have disposable cartridges, they use screens so they can be flushable. For disposable cartridge filter housings you can't beat Ametek. A pressure gauge is used to observe the pressure drop across the cartridge so you know when to replace it. Cartridges are usually replaced when there is about a 15# drop. Most housings do not have a pressure gauge. -'ve never seen one with a pressure gauge or a tap for flushing. The guage makes sense, to read the pressure drop, but what would you flush? The filters are pretty much interchangeable between models/brands, and come in 25, 20, 20, and 5 micron flavors.
