Question: What is in my water? Black 'specks' appeared in our house water. They float, have a waxey look and feel, and when touched they actually crush and smear on your finger. It comes and goes, and seems to have disspeared from all the water except the kitchen faucet where it is still bad. The local council thought it was brown algae, but now says it is a coal-like deposit which is slowly being chipped away and will eventually dissapear on its own. They say it is like a gem - flat sides but in a ball shape. What is it called????? ( Even just a name so I can look it up myself would be great!) I also would love to know: How did it get there? What causes it? Is it safe to drink the water that it is floating in? Will it come back once it finally goes? Is there a quicker way to get rid of it?
Answer: I have seen this in water from faucets that were hooked up with flexible connectors. The rubber tubing inside deteriorates and small pieces come off. Replacing with copper supply tubes cures it.
