 | Redundant Battery Operated Sump Pump |

Question: The house we just moved into has a redundant battery operated sump pump installed in addition to the main AC unit. I can see why the previous owners installed one.. The pump runs about every 20 minutes when dry outside and about every 2 minutes during a hard rain. I tried testing the redundant pump by unplugging the AC pump. When the water hit the sensor, the redundant pump made noise like it was on, but the water did not recede. The previous owner claims they installed a brand new battery last month. Any ideas? I have never had a basement before, so I am somewhat unexperienced when it comes to sump pumps.
Answer: Doesn't sound good. It doesn't seem unlikely that if the backup pump hasn't run in a long time, it's seized/jammed. I saw a waterpowered backup pump somewhere on the internet last year, that just uses running water from your mains to power it, via the bernoulli principle. downside, it presumably uses water. upside, it won't seize. You might look for it as an alternative if you need to replace this pump anyway. i don't remember what the price was.
