Becoming a plumber

Question: I wish to know what patterns of hours are involved in the plumbing trade. As somebody wishing to train for the trade, but with childcare commitments, I'm keen to know if the hours are fairly uniform, or if they wildly fluctuate, thus making childcare arrangements precarious. Constructive feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Answer: -The hours are as varied as any service industry. I work for a specific company with set hours. I work from 5AM to 1:30PM, but my days fluctuate. If you start your own business, you can pretty much count on 24/7 type hours, as you will be on-call for just about anything. I am also on-call all the time, but with the crew we have working, things rarely break and I have only been called in about 4 times in the last two years. -There's plenty of scope for traditional daytime hours, as well as evenings if that's more convenient. My father works from 1.30pm to 10pm five days a week, and most companies will come to some arrangement, as there's such a shortage of good plumbers. It's a sellers market at the moment, though that may well change, as more people realise the huge money in plumbing and get in on the act.
