should I install a sump pump?

Question: The crawl space underneath my house collects some water when it rains heavily as it has here in the northeast with all the el nino storms. I really need a sump pump and everyone in my neighborhood has them in their crawlspaces because we live near a lake and it is a wet area. I am ambivelant about whether I should attempt this important job myself or because i dont really know what i am doing, call in a pro. How do you install a sump and the hose carrying the water. can you plug it in to an outlet outside the your house?

Answer: I'm in the process of putting two of them in. It is a lot cheaper than calling a pro, but it isn't exactly an easy job. Especially if you are in a crawl space. Step 1 -- Buy a sump well. The ones I have are 20" in diameter at the top, and about 2 1/2 feet tall. Step 2 -- Locate a low spot in your crawlspace. Idealy it should be THE low space where water collects. Step 3 -- Start digging. Bury the sump well so that the top is even with the surrounding area. This is the real fun part. Step 4 -- Look for a convienent escape path for the pipe. Purchace the sump pump, piping, and backflow preventer. I'd use PVC piping that is the same diameter as the pump discharge. Step 5 -- Put your pump into the sump well, and run the pipe out of the house. wire an outlet to plug the pump into. Keep in mind that they pull about 7 amps, but that depends on the pump you get. Step 6 -- Once you get the water outside, you need to find a place to dump it, which usually consists of a hill going away from the house. You probably want aren't going to want to do this with the crawlspace flooded, you will be a muddy mess that looks like the creature from the black lagoon by the time you are finished. Materials wise it will cost about $250, between the pump, well, and piping.
