Question: Somewhere between a custom home and a spec there is the type of home building that we are doing. We went to a builder, picked a plan and will not own it until closing. We made all the selections except the sub contractors. We are really concerned about the plumbers. What has been done so far has passed inspection but it is incredible work. A chase is at least an inch beyond a 2 X4 wall. He drilled large holes through a bearing partition(the builder made him change that and the wall will be reinforced). His copper pipes, behind where the washer will be are also outside the 2x4. Some plastic pipes could be pushed back into place with the plaster board but seems like stress on the pipes and the plasterboard. The builder(on the phone) suggested furring strips for the chase. We are meeting tomorrow, my husband wants it all redone. Is this reasonable?
Answer: Your description is not totally clear, but from the gist of it I'd say your husband is correct. You may want a city/county building inspector to take a look at it, perhaps a representative of your local register of contractors, or city plumbing inspector. It kinda sounds awful.
