 | Clogged Drain Pipe |

Question: I hope someone has some good ideas for my little problem. My upstairs bathtub drain was clogged. I tried a snake and Drano, with no improvement. I took the trap apart, and found that the trap was clear, but the pipe going to the main drain pipe was really clogged. This is a 2 1/4 inch steel pipe that runs nearly horizontally under the bathroom floor to the main pipe. It was clogged with big flakes from the steel pipe, and the normal pipe shmutzig. I ran a snake through the mess, and with some work, got through the mess. This pipe is like 8 feet long. To really solve this problem, I thought I might call Roto-rooters to really clean out the messy pipe. This won't be cheap, and I am a student right now, so I have a plan B. I think I can push a 1 1/4 inch pvc pipe down the middle of the steel pipe. Then just leave in there. This should ensure that I always have at least a 1 inch passageway for water. I don't think much will accumulate in the PVC pipe. Anyone think this will work? Do you see any obvious problems?
Answer: I'm not sure I understand. If you have a 2" pipe that clogs, why do you think a 1" pipe won't? If you got the snake thru the clog, I assume you were able to remove the clog. Put it back together and your done. Installing a 1" pipe in the middle will only provide a nice lip for catching debris and cause another clog. If your concerned about it clogging again, put a cup of Drano down it every couple of weeks to prevent it from building up again. And if it does build up stick your snake down it again.
