Preventing clogged drain pipes

Question: Just paid a plumber $150 to come and rod out the clog in my drain that was causing the upstairs shower to back up in the kitchen sink. I couldn't get it myself and when he finally got it, he said it was one of the worst he's ever seen (maybe to justify the $150...hmmm). In any case, apparently it is a problem with all of the houses in my development. The developer put a couple of elbows too close together somewhere under the house, and it tends to catch a lot of crap. Question: The plumber recommended that I pour a gallon of bleach down the drain once a month and let it sit there overnight. I've heard that this could damage the pipes. Any suggestions regarding this or other methods of avoiding clogs in the future?

Answer: Look into a product called Drain Care or a simliar enzyme based product. They're supposed to keep the drains sludge free so that hairs and other stuff that might clog the pipe can move freely along. If you have a physical obstruction, such as the elbows too close that you mentioned, even the cleanest drain might get clogged. But if the plumber says keeping the drain clean will prevent the clogs, then perhaps the enzyme stuff will do the trick and do it safely. As an aside, if the plumbing was constructed in such a way that it continually clogs, is it possible that the plumbing is not code- compliant? Does that give you any recourse with the builder?
