Question: The place we just moved into has a fridge in it, but it works minimaly. We ran it for 5+hours and it was barely cold. I'm afraid it won't keep our food cold enough and it will spoil. How expensive is it to have someone come look at your fridge to fix it? The fridge is very old, and I'm afraid it might not be worth it to fix it. Any one have any experience with this?
Answer: -Try cleaning off the coils first. They will be on the back side of the fridge orunder it. If they are clogged with dust it won't work well. If it needs more than that, it could be pretty expensive. R-12 freon is real costly these days. -I'm a small-time landlord. I own two duplexes (read: 4 refigerators). If your refigerator is not cooling, it is probably on it's way out. THere is not much you can do either. A refigerator (unlike an AC) is a sealed unit. THis means there is no way to add freon if the need arises. Now, before you just give up. First make sure the unit is clean. Find the coils and brush/vacuume them. Make sure there is adaquate air circulation around the unit. Finaly, make sure the controles are set properly and they work. It might be a good idea to twirl them up and down from max to min a few times to see if that loosens them up a bit. One more thing, the door gaskets should be soft, and they should seal completely. If you decide to replace it, don't get a used or rebuilt unit. The rebuild that I bought lasted only two years. For twice the money I could have gotten a brand new unit that would have lasted five times longer.
