Question: We've had our main sewer drain blocked several times recently by roots in the pipes. The RotoRooter guy fixes it, but the roots always grow back. It's been recommended that we replace the old (30+ years) main drain pipe with PVC at a cost of about $2,800 for a 50' line form the house to the street. Does anybody have any idea whether this is a reasonable cost?
Answer: What roots? I'd cut down any and all vegetation that is causing your problem in the first place. All we have growing above our main line, septic tank and drain field, is grass. Anything else and you're just asking for exactly this problem to reoccur, ad infinitum. Seems rather spendy to me. Then again, we have no idea of the topography, or depth to access the existing main. The PVC itself is pretty damn cheap.
