Question: I recently purchased a home and was wondering if somebody could please give me some advise on how to maintain and clean the kitchen sick & plumbing. I spent lots of time cooking in the kitchen and I was wondering how to maintain and clean the kitchen sink and pipes to prevent it from getting clogged. We used to live in an apartment and every time the kitchen sink got clogged, the maintnaice guy came over and did it and I did not have to worry about it. Now that I have my own home, I was wondering how to avoid calling a plumber too often. Does the liquid pipe cleaner sold in the store work? I am worried especially about the kitchen sink and pipes because sometimes food leftovers got into the sink and I guess it could get clogged it pretty easily.
Answer: On top of the good advice you are already getting about being very careful about what goes in the sinks and toilets let me add one caution about drain-o type products. Learn what kind of pipes you have now. Products containing lye will eat through plastic pipes. Also, learn what type of pipes you have taking everything out to the city sewage [or your lateral field]. Learn where they are, how old they are, and if there are known problems with them after a certain period of time. If they have to be dug up you will save money if you do the digging before the plumber arrives. If you have a septic system get in the habit of putting active yeast culture down the system [flush it] once a month. This will extend the life of your septic system between drainings. Learn, now, where all your water shut offs are, from the main one coming in to the ones under all the sinks and toilets. If you have your own laundry set up learn about those, too. You are right, plumbers cost money. Many of their calls can be prevented with good maintenance and just being careful.
