Washing machine drain clogged

Question: Tried the search on DejaNews and did not find anything helpful. I have a newer washing machine discharging into a normal drain which appears to be a pvc like material....house was built in early 70's if that is helpful. I wash clothes mostly in cold water. Evidently, gunk builds up and clogs the drains these days since washing machines do not have a filter anymore. I can see the water actually backing out of the drain pipe. I tried running a lower level water cycle using hot water, but that did not seem to help. Can I safely use a product like Mr Plumber? If not, what can I do short of calling the plumber. Of course, it is Friday the 13th in the evening and I need to do some wash.

Answer: -Liquid plummer should work, and also look into getting a lint guard for the washer it is a screen that goes onto the end of the washer hose and catches lint to prevent clogs. -Forget the chemicals and get a small snake. The chemicals don't hurt the PVC but they eat holes in cast iron if you have CI mains. -A small snake might work for a while but you should plan to have the line professionally snaked. The small snakes just aren't big enough in diameter to do much more than poke a hole through the obstruction. In addition, if you put a lint trap on the drain line and the lint trap falls off of the hose into the drain, you're in much bigger trouble. You can try Liquid Plumber but it seldom works.
