Plumbing career?

Question: I was hoping someone here might be able to give me a bit of advice on taking up plumbing as a career. I’m currently a sea-going marine engineer and my wife informs me it’s time to grow up and get a real job. I think a lot of my skills / knowledge will transfer over fairly well (I served an apprenticeship as a coppersmith / welder) but I have no idea how to get started on the road to being a certified plumber. So, can anyone give me some advice on what I need to find out and where from? How long will it take before I can be certified ( I’m guessing about 5 years)? Do apprentices make a living wage or am I going to be dining out at the soup kitchen till I qualify? I know all you plumbers out the probably don’t want or need more competition in the workplace but and advice would be appreciated.

Answer: -I don't know why no one has taken a shot at me yet in this post but I must completely agree with A. W. The business sucks and it's a thankless job. As professionals, we are a very talented and scrupulous group of people. Unfortunately, we are looked upon in the exact opposite light. -Don't do it. I'm a Master Plumber and have been doing this for many years. Had my own business and finally got tired of banging my head against the wall. In the time it takes to become proficient and properly licensed you could go thru medical school and become a surgeon and be less regulated.
