Question: I currently have a 20 gallon glass tank that I use as a sump for my 60 gallon acryllic tank. I had been using one Rio 2500 pump as a return pump and another to drive my skimmer. Unfortunately, it would appear that the return pump just isn't circulating enough water. (An in-sump pump also tends to shift and start vibrating against the side and other objects in the tank making loud noises). So I've decided to try the external water pump approach again (i.e. drill holes, install bulkhead fittings, etc). I really don't want to mess with drilling glass (I only got the glass tank 'cuz it was *really* cheap), but then I don't want to shell out big bucks for one of those fancy wet/dry acryllic setups. I know that ultimately all I really need is some kind of water reservoir/tub that I can put bulkhead fittings into, but it seems difficult to find something that sort of oblong and rectangular to fit in my tank cabinet. I was looking for suggestions on what other people had done for DIY sumps.
Answer: I also had to use an external pump on my tank for enough circualtion and didnt want to mess with glass and Arcylic is just too expensive. So I bought a large rubbermaid type container which does the job just as good. Easy to drill for a bulkhead and you can probably find one that will fit just about anywhere and the container only cost me $10! The one I got holds about 20gallons(full to the top) and is 2 feet long and 13 inches front to back. Cheaper and easier then any other way if you ask me.
