water powered emergency backup sump pump

Question: Would like to be able to locate a water powered backup sump pump. I need it to be durable and reliable, as anyone would. I'm looking for one that is easy for a do-it-yourselfer like me to install. I've seen the battery powered pump systems, and am not impressed. Have also seen water powered ones that are forced to not only pump out the sump water, but actually have to pump out the added city water as well. This seems so inefficient. Is there not a better way? Also concerned with corrosion, etc. when many of the parts of the pump are either submerged all the time or at least during operation. Since the pump is not actually in use very often, it seems that it should not have any parts in the water (except maybe the float switch?). Anyone able to direct me?

Answer: -I read your question with great interest. I know of a solution to your problem, but it is primarily a simple system put out by a small startup company in Buffalo, New York. They are developing a backup system that is mounted out, above the sump pit, and uses city water to pump out the sump pit. Using a simple design and corrosion resistant materials, this looks to be the best of the best. I will provide more information on where to get one as soon as it crosses my desk. -Home Guard makes a pump that uses the city water pressure to power a backup sump pump using the venturi principle. It has a float hanging off a valve on the water main. Works great unless the discharge line gets plugged, it then helps fill the basement.
