Question: I have a Bradford White gas hot water heater. The "turn-on" temp seems to be set too low, resulting in very short showers unless we turn the hot water on about 1/2 hour before we want a shower and let the heater cycle. The thermostat is made by unitrol. It appears that the face plate of the thermostat is held on by 3 torx screws. How much trouble will I get into if I take the face plate off, and try to figure out why the turn-on point is too low? Is there a pot or other adjustment for this tempature?
Answer: Unless this is a Power Vent or Thru-the-wall vent heater, there should have been a plastic knob on the front face of the Unitrol to set the temperature. Any sign of the shaft for the knob sticking out? There's nothing adjustable inside and I wouldn't recommend disassembly. Gas controls often have a very wide differential between turn on and turn off points. The only fix I've found is replacement of the control.
