Installing sump in crawl space

Question: I get water from time to time in my crawl space and I would like to install a sump. It is a dirt crawl and I was wondering what the correct way to install a sump is. I was planning on burying a 5 gal bucket and putting two bricks in the bottom of it, then putting the sump on top of the bricks. This would allow any dirt or debris to sit on the bottom of the bucket and prevent the sump from clogging. I was wondering since it is a electric sump if I could just run a cord from the sump up the the access door in the floor to the GFI electrical outlet in the utility room, or do I have to install a outlet directly in the crawl? I didnt know if it was some kind of code violation. And also, can I just pump the water right into the back yard then or can I hook it right into the plumping? If someone can tell me if I am going about this correctly , it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Should have its own outlet, no extension cords. Watch the size of the bucket. If too much runoff, the pump will cycle too frequently in a small bucket. For a trickle, it will work fine. Pipe into backyard if you can dump it where it won't run back into the foundation again. In general, you can't pump it into a sanitary sewer system; into a storm sewer, yes. You'll have to monitor the dirt buildup in the bucket since it's a dirt floor; could be a problem.
