Plumbing difficulties and choices

Question: The difficulty is that the same areas in the plumbing keep failing. This is not due to freeze damage, because it can fail in summer. I live is an older model double wide mobile home. The home is supported on block pillars and is stone anchored twice required number of standard anchors. (We survived the Opal hurricane/ tropical storm with minimal damage and that damage was roof damage.) I believe that the plumbing failure is in part due to the use of plastic pipe for both supply and drainage. I have been told by more than one local plumber that plastic is the only way to go because of the minerals in the local water supply. This is west central Georgia and the water is almost too soft to make soap rinse. I grew up in Indiana with water almost too hard to make soap lather. We had iron and copper pipe for the water supply in Indiana. I don't remember near the number of repairs to the plumbing and I helped with most of the repairs done when I was a child. Is there any true to water carried minerals ruining copper pipe in less than two years? Or is it that the local plumbers don't want to do the work of installing copper pipe? Or are they afraid they won't have any customers if every one were to switch to copper supply lines? I may be female, but I do know how to install copper pipe. I know it is a hot, hard job. I have no fear of doing the job myself. I even own the tools needed to do the job. So, is there any truth to the plumbers' claim that the local water will eat copper pipe in less than two years? Who do I seek to gain complete information on this topic?

Answer: Your best source for advice is your local water and your local building departments. I have not heard that a high mineral content can harm copper pipes. Here in Dallas, I worked at a local Home Depot Plumbing department and never heard this concern (although our water has a lot of minerals, it's not soft). When you mention plastic in you message are you refering to PVC or to the gray(somtimes white) Qest tubing used in many mobile homes and RVs?
