Higher a PLUMBER?

Question: My water has been going from hot water to cold over the last week or so. Yesterday morning it was completely cold. I changed the lower element and thermostat. Still cold. This morning I called a handyman friend of mine and he said "did you hit the reset button on the upper thermostat?". I said what button? since I didn't know there was an upper thermostat and element. (Now I know better) Anyway, I pressed the big red button on the upper thermostat and big short, little fire and some smoke and one wire got glowing red hot. Ran to the breaker box and flipped circuit off. Another trip to Home Depot. Replaced wire that glowed, and upper element. Got 3 foot wood stick, turned circuit on, pushed big red button with stick, silence. All seemed working. Went and got something to eat, came back and water was gushing out vent valve on top of water heater. Another trip to Home Depot. They were very nice. I'm getting feeling I live there. I got putty and vent valve. After talking to saleslady who was 20 year master plumber, she recommended I hire a plumber. I think that upper thermostat got fried because original upper element was short circuited when I pushed big red button the first time. And, valve blew because thermostat can't properly control water in tank. So, if I change upper thermostat and vent valve, hot water heater should be fixed. Should I hire a plumber? Do I need a new water heater?

Answer: would be more worried about advice from some so called 20 year master plumber working at the Depot...
