On-demand water heater freezes?

Question: I have a small cabin up in the mountains where it can be counted on to be below freezing and snowing during the winter. I am planning to put a small on-demand water heater in (Aquastar 125 probably). The local gas guys tell me that they've seen where cold air comes down the vent during the night and freezes up the units. Because the pipes are so small they burst. Does anyone have any experience with these in cold (upstate New York) climates? Does any of this make sense?

Answer: He's right that you can't leave water in any pipe or device that will be exposed to freezing temperatures. Instantaneous heaters have a coil of copper pipe in them that serve as the heat exchanger, the coil stays full of water. Some of those instantaneous units have a pilot light that might keep the internal pipes warm enough...if the pilot doesn't go out. If I were you I'd drain the unit when leaving the cabin.
