Sump pump - pedestal versus submersible?

Question: My Flotec pedestal type sump pump failed and fortunately I had a spare Flotec 1/2 HP submersible on hand that I installed in it's place. Now I want to buy another sump pump and keep the Flotec submersible as a spare/backup but I'm wondering what is the best type to go with (pedestal versus submersible) and what brand is most reliable? First some more details... My Flotec pedestal pump was only a few years old and the mode of failure was the shaft was slipping. I took it apart but unfortunately there is no easy way to get at the parts in the tube/shaft that would allow me to fix it. Therefore, I'm not happy with the Flotec design in that it's not very reliable or servicable . I'm also not happy that the Flotec failed after only a few years of operation where my old pump lasted over 15 years. I went to Home Depot and all they seem to sell is Flotec. Then with all this rain we've had over the past monthor so (NJ area) , there has been a high demand for sump pumps and they are all out of stock on the pedestal type. Now I'm wondering if I should go with submersible or the pedestal type pump. I'm also wondering if other brands like Sears/Craftsman, or Wayne are more reliable than Flotec. I did a little research so far and it seems that the submersible pumps are more expensive, quieter, and possibly more reliable. The submersible pump I now have installed got hung up once already (in the off mode) when the floating switch hit against the side wall of the sump hole. This was due to the pump shifting towards the wall after operating several hours. I remedied that by placing a brick in the bottom of the hole to keep the pump positioned correctly but now I'm thinking that I need a submersible pump with a vertial float switch for even better reliability. Fortunately I had an electronic flood alarm installed that alerted me within minutes when the pump failed and before the basement flooded. With all this rain, my pump is pumping about 5 gallons of water with each cycle every 3 minutes or so. Ok, with all that said, here's my questions: What sump pump type is more reliable; pedestal or submersible? What brand is better Flotec, Wayne, or Sears/Craftsman? What brand is more servicable & repairable by the do-it- yourselfer? Does anyone know how I can fix my Flotec pedestal sump pump where the shaft is slipping? The motor and the bottom plate are easilly removed but I can't figure out how to remove the tube from the base. The tube turns but won't unscrew from the base and therefore, I can't get at the shaft parts.
