 | OT: Plumber's Hourly Rate |
Question: Something happened today that I am curious about. Patti called the plumbing company yesterday and asked how much to install a garbage disposal in the kitchen sink. The guy told her approx. $55.00 plus parts. A plumber came this afternoon and was here for exactly one hour..... I grabbed the checkbook and he handed me the bill.... I noticed the hourly rate was $55.00 exactly the amount the man on the phone said... knowing it would take an hour. Now, here's the thing... he was billing 1.5 hours. As I wrote I asked him why he was billing for one and a half hours when he was only here for one hour. He said he starts billing when he leaves the last job... IOW travel time. He was apparently 30 minutes away when he headed this way. I paid him, but don't remember any of my workmen charging any more than the time they actually spent at my place. Is this common? Do you pay plumbers and electricians for travel time?
Answer: It is common practice for plumbers to charge for travel time in our part of the Country.
