 | Plumbing Leaks |

Question: I am buying a spec home and plan to get it inspected. I was wondering if it was worthwhile to also get the plumbing tested to see if there are any leaks, especially under the slab foundation. I talked to a couple of leak detectors and they charge quite high around $500 and they were vague about their methods...something to do with a ball that they drop into the toilet and measure water pressure. Could you advise me on 1) valid methods for leak detection...is just watching the water meter with all the taps turned off the best? 2) Is it worth the expense to do this considering it is a new home and plumbing is under warranty for 2 yrs. Also how reliable are such methods 3) Any experiences in leak detection in new or old homes.
Answer: I think you are getting an estimate to FIND a leak and all you need to do is to test for a leak. Check with you home inspector. I would guess they could put a pressure check on the line to determine if you might have an existing leak cheap. As I recall those tools for finding existing leaks use detectors (generally metal detectors) to find the pipes and ultrasonic sound detectors to find the leak. I could be wrong.
