return gift to plumbing supply store

Question: I needed a special nut for a kitchen faucet, and none of the hardware stores around here had it; Delta said they had it but sent me a nut that was much too big; and the first plumbing supply store I called said they didn't have it but would try to fix me up. I found a plumbing supply store even closer, and the clerk was very energetic. And not territorial. He said he didn't stock this part but would fix me up and invited me to follow him back into the warehouse part of the place. He looked for a faucet like mine**, couldn't find one, took me to a "junk room" where he looked through several boxes of miscellaneous parts, didn't find what we wanted, checked the computer and found that he had 11 of the faucets he had been looking for, said they probably weren't shelved yet, found them, got the part from one box, and saw that it didn't fit my corresponding part. Then he called the regional Delta parts distributor and asked what differences there were between the current vegetable sprayer and the older one (2? years ago), and was told the only difference was the connector with the faucet. **(He was going to take the part out of the box for me, and then order a replacement from Delta.) Then the guy next to me at the counter thought the nut used to attach conduit to an electric junction box might work and he went out to his truck to find one, which he gave to me when he came back. At first I thought it did fit, but I saw it would be difficult if at all possible. After he left, I asked the counterman again, and he left and came back in a while with a nut/nozzle holder pair of parts, still in the original sealed polyethylene bag with the part number on it.. He said iirc that he hoped that would work. No charge because it came from the junk boxes. I had been carrying the whole faucet with me, but this day, I only had half of it. When I got home, I figured out that I really couldn't use the parts he gave me, and later that evening, I was able to force a plastic nut onto the nozzle-holder threads. (I'd been trying for a long time and didn't seem to be making progress, but it finally went in all the way.) So the question is: I go by there all the time, so stopping by is no problem. Should I thank him again and give the parts back to him so that he can give them to someone else. Or should I keep them so he will think he accomplished something by giving them to me??? I have no use for them now and the odds of my ever using them are teeny.

Answer: I'd be inclined to take them back and offer profuse thanks for their efforts. He did accomplish something - he assured your patronage and loyalty. Sounds like you have an excellent hardware store.
