Plumbing tips?...

Question: I need to re-arrange a little bit of plumbing around the bathroom sink, and was hoping for a couple of pointers to make sure I do it 'right' (and in the process revealing my complete ignorance ) * PTFE tape - does it matter which way you wind it? If so, which is the right way - in the same direction as the nut screws on, or in the opposite direction? Is there anything equivalent for the fat threads on plastic U-bends etc?* Compression fittings: if you undo them, do you need to use a new olive when you do them up again? Should anything be put on the olive before assembly? Or on the threads? In theory you should use a new olive, I don't, but instead smear joint with Boss White to seal it. * Is there any special stuff for joining the tap-body to the sink so that the join is waterproof? A plastic should be fitted, but again I tend to supplement this with Boss White (non setting as opposed to mastic) * Pop-up wastes - I think this has been leaking around the connection where the lever enters the plughole bit (a sort of ball-and-socket joint). Is there any recommended way of sealing this?

Answer: We all had to start somewhere, so don't worry, but try reading the FAQ when it gets posted. You wind ptfe tape (or hemp) the same way as the nut screws on - you want the nut to tighten the tape. Plastic fittings rely on a compression seal or an O ring and the threads do not need taping. I use a jointing compound between and around the olive. This means that I do not have to tighten the fitting excessively and can reuse the olive if required. Try Plumber's Mait (sp?) with a plastic washer between the backnut and the underside of the sink. The lever usually enters via a gland. Try tightening the nut that holds the gland together. Otherwise get some silicon grease, disassemble the joint and lubricate/seal the joint with this.
