What size water heater?

Question: We are in the middle of large construction project for our home. We are changing a 3 bed/1 bath into a 4 bed/2.5 bath/den. The dish washer and washing machine stay as is. We currently have a 40 gallon water heater but will change it to a 60 or 75. The age old question. Which one so we don't run out of hot water during peak hours but also don't eat up the energy? We have 2 adults full time in the house, 2 teenagers that come on weekends and a baby on the way. Any guesses would be appreciated.

Answer: -A takagi tankless water heater apx 180000 btu -A 'water saver' head might do wonders if you have teenagers in 'bunches' on weekends! Our 'Kids' bathroom has such a shower. We have two daughters in college, three elementary children PLUS two adults. Over Mardi Gras weekend, oldest daughter brought home two sorority sisters AND their boyfriends. All had to take showers at (relatively) the same time. We have a 40 gal tank that supplies two bathrooms. Over the course of about an hour, ALL six kids took showers between the two bathrooms and no one ran into cold water. At least I didn't hear any screams from behind closed shower doors. I can only guess that the water saver in one shower kept things going . . . I"m no plumber, however, just a dad with a big extended family!
