Question: I have a 6 gal. gas only suburban water heater with electronic ignition. My wife is complaining that the water is too hot. From what I read in the manual, it is designed to get very hot, and the thermostat is not adjustable. When I measure the temperature at the cutout point it is within a few degrees specs. Any electronics whiz out there figured out how to add an adjustment, or a source for a lower temp. thermostat? Is this a fairly simple chore for an experienced DIYer?
Answer: A water heater bypass, although it's not designed for temperature control, will allow you to tweak the hot water temperature. The bypass is really intended for winterizing your trailer by allowing you to fill the system with antifreeze without having to fill the water heater tank with expensive anti-freeze. They're inexpensive to buy and to have installed. After it's installed, you just open the bypass valve a bit and that allows cold water from the water heater input to bypass the heater and rejoin the flow along with the water heater output water. That dilutes the hot water with cold water, decreasing the overall temperature.
